NexTrend: A Case Study
NexTrend, a respected consumer goods OEM, came to PRe Plastics looking for cost-effective and durable solutions for their new handheld kitchen device for mincing garlic.
Overview:
PRe Plastics worked closely with NexTrend to design the injection-molded parts and tooling for the handheld garlic mincer, ensuring every requirement was met. We developed cost-effective manufacturing solutions, including custom in-process assembly.
Challenges:
The biggest challenge with the garlic mincer was ensuring the manufacturability of the complex and substantial design, which could be mass-produced with minimal upfront tooling costs and low production costs. The device required the look and feel of glass while minimizing wall sections to reduce production cycle times. It also had to be capable of mincing garlic with a twisting motion, using two rows of unbreakable teeth.
Solutions:
We designed a two-piece top half that was both hollow and watertight, eliminating excess plastic and maintaining a reduced cycle time. We chose a water-clear, tough material to achieve the glasslike properties and provide substantial strength for the teeth while also permitting a friction fit of the twist top without stress-cracking. A multi-cavity family tool was built, and a custom, at-the-machine assembly system was constructed to achieve the necessary price point.
Conclusion:
After a decade of production and hundreds of thousands of units sold, PRe Plastics is still providing a valuable partnership in the ongoing development of new generations of the “Garlic Twister.”
