ClipperCreek: A Case Study
ClipperCreek required a cost-effective solution to producing components for a high-power next-generation charging station that would provide the durability required to withstand long-term environmental exposures and daily use.
Overview:
PRe Plastics needed to design the injection-molded parts for a dual-mounted, high-power electric vehicle charging station and develop the best material to withstand the anticipated exposures while meeting the price point considerations.
Challenges:
The main challenge to developing the charging station components was maintaining a minimum footprint while allowing for easy assembly of all subcomponents in a UL/ETA-listed watertight housing. We also had to identify and source a robust material that would withstand everyday use and meet V0/UV requirements at a reasonable price point.
Solutions:
We designed a housing with only three major components, utilizing off-the-shelf gasket materials and strain reliefs to minimize tooling and production costs. We also incorporated special design features inside the houses, such as ribbing and bosses, to minimize additional fastening components.
To ensure the material would be appropriate, we partnered with industry professionals to identify a suitable polycarbonate grade to meet or exceed all of the customer’s requirements while remaining within the target price point.
